Glossary: polysemy

The phenomenon of a word having multiple meanings. The meanings are often related by expressing literal and metaphorical readings. For example, compare the use of the adjective hot in the following examples: a hot July day or He has a hot temper . Contrast with homonyms which are words that have multiple, but unrelated meanings.
